The Black Lives Matter movement has caused a number of states to question themselves. While this is not a bad thing in and of itself, introspection is now turning into insanity. Of all the liberal states that are falling all over themselves to engage in some good old fashioned virtue signaling, California might be the most ridiculous.
A bill has been passed in California that will require the creation of a task force. This task force is going to be studying the concept of reparations for black citizens if the state Assembly approves the measure. Since the Assembly overwhelmingly approved similar measures in the past, most are expecting this to happen.
At this point, no one knows what form the reparations would take. Even those who support the measure are asking questions about the feasibility of the measure. The initiative seems purposefully vague, as the state of California is trying to buy some goodwill with their progressive population without actually opening their coffers.
All of the typical code words are being used. Is California merely paying lip service to an important issue or they do have real plans to offer reparations? Only time will tell. “Let’s be clear: Chattel slavery, both in California and across our nation, birthed a legacy of racial harm and inequity that continues to impact the conditions of Black life in California,” says Holly Mitchell.
As a Democratic senator, she is used to these types of initiatives. The Democrats love stepping out in front of the public and offering these sweeping statements. The vote did pass by a 33-3 vote, to be fair. If successful, the initiative will lead to the creation of a nine person commission. Before anyone gets too carried away, we do have a few warnings to issue.
No actual reparations have been issued as of yet. If the Assembly allows the measure to pass, it will be a long time before that has a chance to happen. The committee in question is not actually committing to anything here. The commission wouldn’t be formed until next summer. Those of us who know the Democrats well know that they are simply buying themselves a little bit of time.
They need to portray themselves as the caring, empathetic party right now. To the best of our knowledge, California is the only state that is doing this. The money that would be given would have to be generated by the people who live in this state, not the federal government. Meanwhile, there are others who want to know why a state that was free prior to the Civil War would need to offer reparations.
Racism is inherent to the national systems, though. This is what the progressives are arguing for. Others are worried about the issues that will take place if the state is only willing to offer reparations to black citizens. Surely, there are other groups that have been marginalized. Asian citizens would have a major bone to pick in these instances. Indigenous tribes that resided in California before the white man arrived would be peeved, too.
So how does this work? If the state is looking to tax white citizens only, that is going to lead to a court battle unlike any other that this nation has seen. At least they are not doing the same thing that one Black Lives Matter leader suggested in Chicago, who claimed that looting was its own form of reparations. Whether the progressives get their way or not remains to be seen.
California senator Steven Bradford his an answer for anyone who believes that they do not need to provide reparations because they never owned a slave. “I hear far too many people say, ‘Well, I didn’t own slaves, that was so long ago.’ Well, you inherit wealth — you can inherit the debt that you owe to African-Americans,” he said. It’s an interesting theory and we hope they have the chance to test it out.
