It is kind of Biden to toss Harris a bone like this. She’s already failed spectacularly when it comes to dealing with the border crisis and now she’ll have a chance to fail at something else. The Hill has more about their latest initiative:
“To signify the importance of our efforts, today I’m asking Vice President Harris to help these efforts and lead them among her many other responsibilities,” Biden said. “With her leadership and your support, we’re going to overcome again, but it’s going to take a hell of a lot of work.”
Biden called the challenges to voting rights in recent months a “truly unprecedented assault on our democracy.” Georgia, Florida and Arizona, all competitive states in the 2020 election, have seen Republican-led legislatures drastically overhaul voting procedures. Texas is looking to pass a similar law, though Democratic lawmakers there managed to thwart its passage over the weekend.”
We are not sure what he is trying to accomplish here. Why should Harris be placed in charge of such an important task? She doesn’t know the first thing about voting rights. Joe Manchin’s and Kyrsten Sinema’s opposition when it comes to ending the filibuster cannot be dislodged, no matter how hard she tries. That’s the only chance the Democrats have of passing a meaningful bill.

Near as we can tell, the rationale here is easy enough to follow. As this administration’s highest-ranking African-American official, she is the most natural candidate to become the face of their latest effort. This allows the White House to look upon the GOP’s latest voting laws as being a form of racism.
Harris releases a statement on her new role: "In the days and weeks ahead, I will engage the American people, and I will work with voting rights organizations, community organizations, and the private sector to help strengthen and uplift efforts on voting rights nationwide." pic.twitter.com/p7D96WCdcb

Biden is probably also banking on Harris’ past relationships that she has built in the Senate. If she was ever going to leverage these relationships and move some votes in their direction, the time is now. That’s all well and good but it ignores one key fact. Harris was only in the Senate for four years.
Sad as it is to admit, Biden is probably the best man for the job. Joe Manchin is the key vote here and Harris does not have a solid relationship with him. Harris has made attempts at trying to push him in the direction that she wants but they did not work.

In anticipation of the new role, Harris is speaking with MSNBC and making all sorts of bold proclamations. In her words, she “eats “no” for breakfast”. Well, we hope that she has saved her appetite because the Senate is sure to have a sizable spread waiting for her. The full quote is pretty hilarious, in fact.
“I eat ‘no’ for breakfast … Don’t be encumbered by the inability of others to see the potential of who you are,” Harris said. It’s these type of faux inspirational quotes that make us chuckle because they are the hallmark of the Joe Biden administration. He and Harris are not here to actually get anything done, they are here to offer up flowery quotes that make it seem like things are getting accomplished.
Harris is probably only being put in charge because she made the request. After being dealt an impossible hand with the border crisis, her team has already gone on the record as claiming that they were “vexed” by the decision. In the meantime, Harris claims that she is looking into the “root causes” of the problem. She’s not even trying to deal with the border issue itself. It’s all a bunch of gobbledygook at this point.

Even CNN’s Natasha Bertrand is not buying into the Harris rhetoric. “She’s focused on [‘root causes,’] from governance to climate change to tackling food insecurity … but … her team has come out and said publicly, ‘We do not own the issues at the border,” Bertrand says. Harris is crossing her fingers and hoping that she is able to change public perception by associating herself with a different issue. She’d better avoid the Joe Manchin tussle if she can. If anything, all she’ll do is help his re-election bid in his home state!
