Someone needs to wake up Oregon governor Kate Brown. We are not sure if she even knows what year it is at this point. She’s now issuing an outdoor mask mandate. While many states are looking to ease restrictions, she is one of the few that is ramping up. How much patience are these people supposed to have?
She did offer some clarification about this mandate, at least. If you are walking the dog or you are outside with members of your own household, these are not situations where you need to mask up. Outdoor gatherings with larger crowds or smaller parties where you are going to be exposed to people outside of your household are the ones that need to be monitored.
You know that a policy is sure to be controversial when even the Democrats seem to be on the fence about it. “Have any medical experts actually recommended this?” former Obama aide Tommy Vietor asked. It’s a very fair question, to say the least. Brown is making it up as she goes along at this point and we are tired of watching it.
Today we have 1,000 COVID-19 patients in our hospitals. I’m continuing to take actions to protect Oregonians and save lives.

“Current data suggest the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in outdoor settings is minimal,” the current CDC guidance reads. “In general, fully vaccinated people do not need to wear a mask outdoors. Fully vaccinated people might choose to wear a mask in crowded outdoor settings if they or someone in their household is immunocompromised,” they go on to say.
What happened to being the party of science? Dr. Fauci himself isn’t even willing to play along on this one. The farthest that he has been willing to go is a gentle nudge. Those who want to wear masks outdoors when they are in close quarters with strangers are okay to do so but the Feds do not seem to have a vested interest in making that happen at the moment.
They have correctly sensed that people are tired of the shifting goalposts. At the moment, this looks like another round of political theater. It’s not like this policy is actually going to help anyone. Meanwhile, Kate Brown is acting like this is business as usual.
“Today we have 1,000 COVID-19 patients in our hospitals. I’m continuing to take actions to protect Oregonians and save lives. Effective Friday 8/27, masks will be required in public outdoors settings where physical distancing is not possible, regardless of vaccination status,” Brown tweeted. If we had to guess, this mandate took place because she is worried about the virus continuing to spread at the Oregon State Fair.
If you take a closer look at the current graphs, you can see why she is so concerned. On the other hand, what are cloth masks going to do in this instance? Other cities have had encouraging experiences with events of this nature, as Chicago’s Lollapalooza festival only produced roughly 200 cases out of 400,000 attendees. State Health Officer Dr. Dean Sidelinger seems to think masks will help:
Who's been vaccinated? And who hasn't?

“It is much easier for people with the Delta variant, compared to people who were sick last year, to infect others around them,” said State Health Officer Dr. Dean Sidelinger. “This is because they have one thousand times more virus in their nose – which means that those around them are much more likely to get sick because this variant behaves so differently. We are starting to see instances where cases are clustering around events, like outdoor music festivals, that happen outdoors. Wearing masks in crowded settings – even outdoors – will help slow the spread of COVID-19.”
We’ll leave you with this: the vaccines do appear to be providing some serious protection for those who are willing to get their jabs. California is experiencing some encouraging numbers as they study the differences between those who require hospitalization and those who do not. The age adjusted hospitalization rate in unvaccinated persons (29.4) was 29.2 times the rate in fully vaccinated persons (1.0). We’re not here to tell anyone how to live but the Delta variant is currently having its way with the non vaccinated.
