Ben Shapiro to Add Entertainment Business Built for Conservatives

Conservative icon and media tycoon Ben Shapiro has announced that he plans to launch an entertainment arm of his already widely successful news media outlet.

Shapiro, who is the owner and Editor in Chief of the online news journal, The Daily Wire, said that he plans to expand into films and television shows that “won’t promote leftist causes,” according to The Hill.

In an opinion piece which was posted on The Daily Wire, Shapiro spoke of his background in conservative journalism, calling the late founder of Breitbart News, Andrew Breitbart his “mentor.” According to Shapiro, Breitbart was fond of saying that “politics is downstream of culture.”

“What he meant by this is that more people are shaped by the culture that surrounds them than by politics directly: we consume movies and TV shows; we get together and discuss the latest in sports… we swim in a sea of culture,” he explained. The conservative commentator argued  that conservatives “live increasingly in the same culture as those on the Left.”

“So conservatives have two choices: they can tune out, or they can find alternatives,” the conservative commentator argues.

“The problem is that Republicans won’t win anybody over by simply disengaging,” he continues. “We need those who aren’t political to engage with a different sort of content: content that is edgy and entertaining and awesome, but that doesn’t actively work to undermine the very values that have made this country exceptional.”

“We need to give people options,” Shapiro asserted. He went on to say that the Daily Wire plans to start will “be jumping into the world of entertainment content.”

“We’re going to be bringing out movies — edgy, entertaining, awesome movies that won’t mock your values. We’re going to be producing TV shows — comedies and dramas that take you seriously, and that don’t take advantage of your viewership to promote leftist causes,” Shapiro explains.

He acknowledged that it was a “risky move” that could, admittedly,  “alienate some people who feel uncomfortable with conservatives making entertainment,” he adds that it is important for them “to fight back.”

Shapiro’s ethos in pursuing entertainment seems to be an attempt to get himself ahead of the curve. So often in news, journalists and even commentators are chasing the story.

Aside from the occasional bill that is influenced by constituents calling their representatives, or influence on positive or negative coverage of a candidate, news media is behind, always, because reporting is about telling what already happened.

In storytelling, we hypothesize about what could happen, if the circumstances were to allow it. We see what might happen and are able to visualize what a world could look like if we make the environment for it to grow. It can also warn very effectively, about what could happen in the future, if a certain path is taken.

The idea of media being “downstream” of culture verbalizes the concept that what happens is a result of what citizens accept into their lives as truth. In the case of Hollywood, there has been a monopoly on what Americans mentally ingest for the purpose of relaxation, and it has eaten a considerable chunk of their downtime.

Shapiro’s plan is to continue accurate and even moral, non-leftist messaging into the after-business hours.

According to Deadline Hollywood, several films are already in the works, including “Run Hide Fight,” which is the story of a 17-year-old high school student who attempts to protect herself and her schoolmates from an active-shooter at her school.

Daily Wire co-founder Jeremy Boreing said that the film will premier on Jan. 14 and be live-streamed on Daily Wire and YouTube.

“Run Hide Fight is ultimately a movie about courage in the face of evil,” Boreing told Deadline. “This is a gut-wrenching film that does not offer easy talking points, which is why liberal Hollywood executives have refused to distribute it.”
